Where hydroponics sits in the CBSE syllabus

Soilless growing isn’t an add-on activity — it maps onto requirements that already exist in the curriculum, from middle school skill projects right through to senior secondary practicals. We shape each session to the stage the class is at.

CLASSES VI–VIII
Kaushal Bodh — Work with Life Forms

Skill education is now mandatory for Classes VI to VIII under NEP 2020, delivered through the NCERT Kaushal Bodh activity books. Students take up hands-on projects across three skill areas, and hydroponics belongs to the first.

Kaushal Bodh is assessed through activity books, viva, portfolios and teacher observation rather than written exams alone — so students need something real to build, observe, record and present. A live hydroponic system gives them exactly that.

CLASSES IX–X
Agriculture skill subject (Code 408) & Science

For schools offering Agriculture as a skill subject, our sessions support units on crop production and management, horticulture, and seed production and nursery management — with a practical, modern-methods angle students can carry into their portfolio and viva.

It also reinforces core Science content: Life Processes (nutrition and transport in plants), and the Green Skills unit that runs through the employability skills syllabus.

CLASSES XI–XII
Agriculture (Code 808) & Biology practicals

At senior secondary, sessions go deeper — nutrient solution chemistry, EC and pH management, plant nutrition and deficiency symptoms, and the economics of a controlled-environment farm.

This connects directly to Biology topics like Mineral Nutrition and Plant Growth and Development, and to Agriculture units on crop production, protected cultivation and agri-entrepreneurship.

ACROSS CLASSES
Eco Clubs, ATL, exhibitions and projects

Beyond the syllabus itself, a working hydroponic unit gives Eco Clubs, Atal Tinkering Labs, science exhibitions and investigatory projects a live, year-round subject — one that produces actual data on growth rates, water use and nutrient dosing.

“Introduction to Hydroponics” — Class VIII

September 2026 · Senior Auditorium · Kaushal Bodh programme

TechieKisan delivered a full-cohort session for Class VIII students as part of the school’s Kaushal Bodh programme. The session opened with what plants need to grow — water, nutrients, oxygen, light, carbon dioxide and the right temperature — before moving into soilless cultivation.

Two systems were demonstrated live: a wick system, where a wick draws nutrient-rich water up from a reservoir to the plant, and Deep Water Culture, where roots sit directly in nutrient solution with an air pump supplying oxygen. Students came up in pairs to sow, transplant and handle the units themselves.

The session also covered microgreens — what they are, how they’re cultivated, their nutritional benefits, and why they work well in small spaces like a school balcony or classroom corner. Teachers stayed back afterwards to look at the systems more closely and discuss running them as ongoing class projects.
